This antique Karabagh rug, circa 1900, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Caucasian runner distinguished by its luminous blue field and finely drawn all-over lattice of stylized floral motifs. The crisp ivory border and richly articulated geometric-floral patterning give the piece strong visual rhythm, while its hand-knotted character and age lend depth, nuance, and collector appeal. An ideal statement piece for a hallway, entryway, or living room.
Muted cool tones of blue, ivory, rust, slate, sage, taupe, and brown, with a blue field.
Karabagh rugs are made in the south eastern Caucasus close to the Kazak district bordering North Eastern Iran. They have varied designs. Some derive from the classical 18th Century carpets, such as the large medallion format, and some are more formal French influence, related to the Aubusson and Savonnerie styles with their more realistic drawing. They are more often woven on a woolen foundation.
