This vintage Khotan rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind runner distinguished by its elongated format, warm terracotta field, and finely drawn geometric tribal motifs. The hand-knotted design features a structured all-over composition with small medallion forms, ivory patterning, and multiple decorative borders that reflect the refined East Turkestan weaving tradition. Its balanced symmetry and softly aged palette give it strong decorative presence in a hallway, entryway, or living room.

Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
