This antique Khotan rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind carpet that showcases the refined East Turkestan aesthetic in an elongated gallery format. Its softly faded taupe field is enlivened by repeating pomegranate-like floral motifs in coral and rust, framed by a richly drawn border that gives the piece a balanced, collector-friendly presence. Hand-knotted with the distinctive decorative restraint and elegance prized in Khotan weavings, it brings warmth and patina to an interior and is especially well-suited for a hallway, living room, or dining area.
Faded warm tones of taupe, rust, coral, terracotta, gold, rose, and beige, with a taupe field.
Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
