Dimensions: 7'1" x 16'5" (216 cm x 500 cm).
Circa: 1920.
This antique Malayer rug, circa 1920, is a hand-knotted Persian carpet distinguished by a finely detailed blue-gray field, ivory palmette medallion, and intricate floral latticework. Its elongated 7' x 16' format, softly aged palette, and layered guard borders showcase the refined craftsmanship and decorative nuance prized in Malayer weaving. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, dining area, or hallway.
Faded neutral tones of blue gray, ivory, taupe, rust, sage, charcoal, teal, and brown, with a blue gray field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
