General Rug Information

Antique and Vintage rugs are handmade and works of art. They have more character and aesthetic value than machine made rugs. Compare a painting done by an artist to a photograph of a painting. Both are visually the same, but the painting done by the artist has more individuality, therefore more value.

Antique rugs are 100 years old. Anything made from 1920 and before are considered antique. Semi-antique rugs are made between 1920-1950. Anything younger is considered Vintage.

The entire process of rug making is handmade. Every knot is tied by hand. The wool and yarn are handspun and dyed by hand. Even after the rug is completed, they are sheared and washed by hand. A lot of labor and love goes into making every rug which adds to the cost. On the other hand, a machine rug is made at 50x or more the speed.

The back represents the tightness of the weave. You can see how small the knots are and how compact it is. The tightness of the weave adds to the quality of the rug and makes it more durable. We always proudly show the back of every rug on our online shop.

Here is how it works:
A 9’ x 12’  rug takes 3 people simultaneously sitting across the loom about 4 months to weave (depending how tightly the rug is woven). This means each person weaves 3 feet of the width.

Understanding Rug Size & Room Decor

A rug defines the space of the room, so this would depend on the layout of your furniture and how much floor you want to cover. Also keep in mind the setting of your furniture. Do you want your sofa and chairs on top or next to the rug?

Our #1 advice is to choose the rug first and then furniture, fabric, etc. There are endless options of fabrics and furniture to choose from, but not as many rugs that may fit your criteria (budget, size, color).

Cleaning, Care & Maintenance

We highly recommend gentle vacuuming once a week (depending on the usage). We also recommend having it washed by a handmade rug specialist cleaner once every 2-5 years. Rugs in high traffic areas should be cleaned every 2 years. This will add longevity and value to your rug. Steam cleaning is not recommended, the rug must be soak washed.

 Yes.

We recommend blotting the area as quickly as possible with a clean rag or towel. Soak the stain out of the rug and do not let it sit. Send it to a handmade rug specialist cleaner if the stain remains.

The rugs are woven by hand. Any perceived "imperfections" are due to its handmade nature.

Only if you are concerned about the rug slipping on the floor. It does not add to the longevity of the rug, only prevents slipping.

Yes! It is highly recommended to rotate the rug once a year for more even wear throughout the years. This way, all parts of the rug get the same amount of wear and tear.

Depends on the condition it was bought in and how well you maintain it. It can last a lifetime and pass down from generation to generation if bought in good condition and maintained well.
