This antique Khotan rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind East Turkestan carpet distinguished by its elongated gallery format and refined all-over lattice of stylized pomegranate and floral motifs. The softly faded rose and dusty mauve field is framed by multiple borders, giving the piece a beautifully timeworn presence and the balanced, collector-friendly character that defines classic Khotan weaving. Its elegant scale and subdued palette make it an ideal choice for a hallway, living room, or dining area.

Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
