This antique Khotan rug, woven circa 1880, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind textile from East Turkestan distinguished by its elongated format and refined all-over drawing. The field presents a beautifully faded palette of rose and taupe with repeating botanical and lattice-like motifs, framed by a crisp geometric border that showcases the balanced artistry prized in 19th-century Khotan weaving. Its soft patina and elegant symmetry make it an ideal centerpiece for a hallway, living room, or bedroom.

Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
