This antique Anatolian rug, circa 1930, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind village weaving distinguished by its softly faded palette and bold geometric drawing. The composition features stacked medallion forms, compartmented motifs, and a crisp border rendered in a restrained ivory and taupe palette that highlights its artisanal character and decorative versatility. A refined accent for an entryway, hallway, or office.
Faded neutral tones of ivory, taupe, camel, and beige, with a ivory field.
Anatolian is a broad regional term covering rugs woven across the Anatolian plateau of Turkey, encompassing production from dozens of weaving centers and village traditions from the medieval period to the present. The earliest surviving Anatolian rugs, fragments of which date to the thirteenth century, already display the bold geometric vocabulary — stepped medallions, hooked borders, stylized animal forms — that would characterize the tradition for centuries.
Antique Anatolian rugs are particularly sought for their use of natural dyes, their vibrant warm palettes, and the improvisational energy of their design. Whether finely woven urban pieces or rustic village work, they share a directness and strength of color that makes them compelling in almost any setting.
