Bakhshayesh rugs are woven in a village of the same name in the Heriz region of northwest Iran, and are closely related to Serapi carpets in their large-scale geometric compositions and use of vegetable dyes. They are among the most beautiful and sought-after of all antique Persian carpets, produced from the mid-nineteenth century onward in relatively small quantities.
Distinguished by their spacious, boldly drawn medallion designs, soft camel and ivory grounds, and a rich palette of madder reds, indigos, and earthy golds, Bakhshayesh rugs combine tribal directness with an almost architectural grandeur. Their large format makes them particularly powerful in generous rooms, where their colors and compositions hold their own against high ceilings and substantial furniture.
