This antique Shiraz rug, circa 1930, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian tribal weaving with a bold geometric composition and richly articulated border system. Its stepped lozenge medallions, ivory compartments, and warm rust and taupe field create a beautifully balanced design with the character and texture collectors prize in hand-knotted wool pile rugs. Shiraz is the capital city of Fars province in south western Iran and is major collection center for the regions tribal and village rugs. They are woven on a wool foundation with an asymmetrical knot, usually with medallions on a densely covered field of geometric and animal motifs.
