This antique Saraband runner, circa 1930, is a hand-knotted Persian rug with a richly geometric tribal composition and a time-softened earthy palette. Its charcoal-brown field carries a vertical procession of ivory, rust, and muted teal diamond medallions, framed by intricate guard borders that showcase the precision of its wool pile craftsmanship. An ideal accent for a hallway, entryway, or kitchen.
Faded warm tones of charcoal, rust, ivory, camel, muted teal, taupe, sienna, and slate, with a charcoal field.
Saraband rugs are woven in the Saraband district of Arak province in west-central Iran, and are perhaps best known for the "mir" or boteh field pattern — rows of small paisley-like teardrop forms — that has become one of the most widely recognized motifs in Oriental rug design. The boteh may represent a bent cypress tree, a flame, or a stylized leaf; its exact origin is debated.
Classic Saraband rugs feature this all-over boteh field on a rich red ground with a distinctive border composition. They are woven on a cotton foundation with the asymmetric knot and a medium pile. Their warm, rhythmic pattern and versatile palette have made them enduringly popular in traditional and transitional interiors.
