This antique circa 1930 Saraband runner is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian rug with a finely articulated geometric compartment design. Its softly aged ivory, taupe, and brown palette frames rows of starbursts, hooked motifs, and angular tribal ornament within multiple narrow borders. An ideal accent for a hallway, entryway, or kitchen.
Faded neutral tones of ivory, taupe, brown, charcoal, beige, camel, and sage, with a ivory field.
Saraband rugs are woven in the Saraband district of Arak province in west-central Iran, and are perhaps best known for the "mir" or boteh field pattern — rows of small paisley-like teardrop forms — that has become one of the most widely recognized motifs in Oriental rug design. The boteh may represent a bent cypress tree, a flame, or a stylized leaf; its exact origin is debated.
Classic Saraband rugs feature this all-over boteh field on a rich red ground with a distinctive border composition. They are woven on a cotton foundation with the asymmetric knot and a medium pile. Their warm, rhythmic pattern and versatile palette have made them enduringly popular in traditional and transitional interiors.
