This antique Persian Malayer rug, circa 1930, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind piece distinguished by its softly faded palette and finely drawn all-over geometric patterning. The hand-knotted design pairs a warm ivory field with taupe and camel motifs, framed by a classic border and accented with delicate touches of pale aqua that enhance its timeworn character and decorative versatility. An ideal accent for a bedroom, hallway, or office.
Faded neutral tones of ivory, taupe, camel, beige, pale aqua, and brown, with a ivory field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
