Dimensions: 2'9" x 12'7" (84 cm x 384 cm).
Circa: 1920.
This antique Malayer runner, circa 1920, is a hand-knotted Persian rug with a finely detailed all-over lattice of stylized floral and boteh-like motifs. Its softly faded blue gray field, ivory accents, and muted rose border create the nuanced patina and refined geometry prized in early 20th-century Malayer weaving. An ideal accent for a hallway, entryway, or kitchen.
Faded neutral tones of blue gray, ivory, muted rose, taupe, charcoal, sage, tan, and slate, with a blue gray field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
