Circa: 1920.
This antique Malayer runner, circa 1920, is a hand-knotted Persian rug with an intricately drawn all-over garden design in softly aged taupe, ivory, slate blue, and warm brown. Its repeating palmettes, stylized floral forms, and finely detailed geometric border showcase the nuanced craftsmanship and graceful symmetry prized in Malayer weaving. An ideal accent for a hallway, entryway, or kitchen.
Faded neutral tones of taupe, ivory, slate blue, warm brown, charcoal, camel, pale blue, and ebony, with a taupe field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
