This antique circa 1930 Malayer rug is a hand-knotted Persian runner with a softly faded blue gray field filled by an elegant all-over lattice of ivory floral rosettes and palmettes. Its finely drawn floral border and restrained palette lend the wool-pile weaving a refined, airy presence while preserving the detailed craftsmanship prized in Malayer rugs. An ideal accent for a hallway, entryway, or long living room passage.
Faded cool tones of blue gray, ivory, taupe, charcoal, sage, and camel, with a blue gray field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
