This antique Afghan rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind tribal carpet with a striking all-over gul design arranged in a long, elegant runner-like format. Its finely balanced geometric pattern, soft aged palette, and crisp border work give it strong decorative presence, while the hand-knotted construction and wool pile speak to enduring craftsmanship and collector appeal. An ideal centerpiece for a hallway, dining room, or living room.

Although Afghanistan shares its western border with Iran, its rugs share no similarities. It is intersected by Baluch, Uzbec and Turkmen weavers and so have a Central Asian influence. The weavers are tribal and nomadic and often use the “Gul” or elephants foot design. They come in deep madders and rusts with black outlining. They sometimes use greens, yellows and blue in the accent colors.
