This vintage Persian Gabbeh rug, circa 1960, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind piece distinguished by its spacious ivory field and broad taupe-brown borders animated with small tribal figures and animal motifs. Hand-knotted with the bold simplicity and tactile character prized in Gabbeh weaving, its geometric guard borders and scattered accent colors in indigo, burgundy, and gold give it a quietly graphic, collector-friendly presence. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, bedroom, or office.
Muted neutral tones of ivory, taupe, brown, indigo, burgundy, gold, and camel, with a ivory field.
Gabbe (also Gabbeh) rugs are woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribal women in the Zagros Mountains of southern Iran, primarily by the Qashqai and Luri tribes. The word "gabbeh" means "raw" or "unfinished" in Persian, reflecting the bold, improvisational aesthetic of these textiles — thick-piled, loosely knotted, and filled with naive figurative imagery: animals, people, trees, and abstract forms drawn directly from the weaver's imagination and daily life.
Their thick, soft pile, earthy natural dyes, and utterly original imagery have made Gabbeh rugs enormously popular since they were "discovered" by the Western market in the 1980s. They bring immediate warmth and personality to any interior.
