This handmade, one-of-a-kind antique Khotan rug from East Turkestan, circa 1940, showcases a striking hand-knotted geometric composition with compartmentalized motifs, stepped forms, and crisp border work. Its ivory field is enlivened by rust, brown, and pale blue accents that give the design a refined yet graphic presence, making it especially appealing to collectors of Central Asian rugs. Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
