This antique Persian Bidjar rug, circa 1910, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind carpet distinguished by its striking prayer-format composition and finely drawn floral ornament. The soft taupe field is framed by luminous sky blue borders and anchored by deep indigo corner spandrels and a stepped central lozenge, creating a refined balance of geometric structure and traditional village artistry. Its intricate border work and collector-friendly antique palette make it an elegant statement piece for a living room, dining room, or office.
Muted neutral tones of taupe, sky blue, indigo, rust, ivory, slate, and camel, with a taupe field.
Bidjar is a Kurdish town in northwestern Iran, renowned for producing what are often called the "iron rugs of Persia" — the heaviest, most densely woven and structurally rigid pile rugs in the world. The distinctive construction technique, in which the weft threads are hammered tightly into place during weaving, creates an almost board-like stiffness and an exceptionally dense pile that wears virtually indefinitely.
Bidjar designs include elaborate herati patterns, large floral medallions, and the distinctive "garden" or vase carpet format. Their palette tends toward deep jewel tones — rich madder reds, indigos, and ivory. Bidjar rugs are ideal for high-traffic areas and are among the most durable of all Oriental rugs.
