This antique circa 1940 Malayer rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian village weaving with a finely drawn all-over lattice design and a beautifully time-softened palette. Hand-knotted with a wool pile, it features pale ivory and soft blue patterning framed by a bold floral border, giving the piece an elegant balance of delicacy and structure. Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
