This handmade, one-of-a-kind antique Belouch rug from the 1940s showcases a distinctive tribal composition with a pictorial ivory field framed by layered geometric borders. Hand-knotted with a character-rich, time-softened palette, it features stylized bird motifs, small animal forms, and crisp tribal devices in rose, camel, and blue that give the piece remarkable visual charm and collector appeal. Its narrow 2' x 4' format makes it especially well-suited for an entryway, hallway, or beside a bed.
Faded warm tones of brown, rose, ivory, taupe, blue, and camel, with a brown field.
Belouch (also Baluch or Balochi) rugs are woven by the Baluch tribal confederacy spanning eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and parts of Pakistan. Among the most immediate and expressive of all tribal rugs, they are made on horizontal ground looms using a wool foundation and a distinctive palette dominated by deep reds, rich browns, dark navy, and ivory — colors drawn from the natural dyes of the desert plateau.
Designs include prayer formats, repeating geometric field patterns, and stylized tree-of-life compositions, often finished with elaborate flatwoven kilim ends. Their rustic, heartfelt quality and superb natural dyes make them perennially popular with collectors and designers seeking authentic tribal character.
