This antique Belouch rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind tribal weaving distinguished by its striking compartmental geometric design and softly timeworn palette. The ivory field is animated by sky blue and brown linear motifs, framed by multiple guard borders that showcase the crisp, graphic character collectors prize in Belouch rugs. Its hand-knotted look and refined geometric patterning make it an elegant accent for a living room, bedroom, or office.
Faded cool tones of ivory, sky blue, brown, charcoal, and taupe, with a ivory field.
Belouch (also Baluch or Balochi) rugs are woven by the Baluch tribal confederacy spanning eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and parts of Pakistan. Among the most immediate and expressive of all tribal rugs, they are made on horizontal ground looms using a wool foundation and a distinctive palette dominated by deep reds, rich browns, dark navy, and ivory — colors drawn from the natural dyes of the desert plateau.
Designs include prayer formats, repeating geometric field patterns, and stylized tree-of-life compositions, often finished with elaborate flatwoven kilim ends. Their rustic, heartfelt quality and superb natural dyes make them perennially popular with collectors and designers seeking authentic tribal character.
