This antique Khotan rug, hand-knotted circa 1920, is a handmade one-of-a-kind textile distinguished by its refined all-over lattice design and softly aged palette. The warm beige field is articulated with brown geometric and floral-derived motifs, framed by a spacious border that reflects the balanced elegance associated with East Turkestan weaving traditions. Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
