Dimensions: 4'1" x 5'10" (124 cm x 178 cm).
Circa: 1920.
This antique circa 1920 Malayer rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian weaving with a finely detailed all-over lattice of stylized floral motifs in a softly weathered blue gray and ivory palette. Its hand-knotted wool pile, geometric guard borders, and warm camel outer frame give this small-scale rug exceptional collector character and understated decorative versatility. An ideal accent for a bedroom, entryway, or office.
Faded neutral tones of blue gray, ivory, camel, taupe, charcoal, ochre, and brown, with a blue gray field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
