This antique Malayer rug, circa 1920, is a hand-knotted Persian carpet distinguished by an ivory architectural field, intricate geometric ornament, and a luminous powder-blue floral border. Its finely drawn repeating motifs, softened patina, and restrained accents of blush, charcoal, and camel give the wool pile a refined early 20th-century character. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, dining area, or library.
Faded neutral tones of ivory, powder blue, blush, charcoal, camel, taupe, dark brown, and sage, with a ivory field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
