This antique Afghan runner, circa 1910, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind tribal rug with a striking all-over gul design set against a warm rust field. Its hand-knotted character is expressed through crisp geometric drawing, softly aged color, and a beautifully balanced palette of rust, ivory, and blue that gives the long format exceptional visual rhythm. An ideal centerpiece for a hallway, entryway, or narrow living space.
Faded warm tones of rust, terra cotta, ivory, teal, sky blue, rose, and camel, with a rust field.
Although Afghanistan shares its western border with Iran, its rugs share no similarities. It is intersected by Baluch, Uzbec and Turkmen weavers and so have a Central Asian influence. The weavers are tribal and nomadic and often use the “Gul” or elephants foot design. They come in deep madders and rusts with black outlining. They sometimes use greens, yellows and blue in the accent colors.
