Dimensions: 5'3" x 7'9" (160 cm x 236 cm).
Circa: 1940.
This antique circa 1940 Rag Rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind flatwoven textile with a beautifully understated striped composition and softly timeworn character. Its ivory ground is animated by delicate bands of blush, pale blue, and muted peach, giving the piece an airy folk-art presence and an easy decorative versatility. An ideal accent for a bedroom, hallway, or casual living room.
Faded neutral tones of ivory, blush, pale blue, peach, and taupe, with a ivory field.
Rag rugs are woven from strips of recycled or surplus fabric — cotton, wool, or silk — rather than yarn, producing a textile that is both resourceful and visually distinctive. The tradition spans many cultures: American hooked and braided rag rugs, Turkish "Caput" flatweaves made from surplus cotton, and Moroccan "Boucherouite" rugs of recycled fabric strips.
Moroccan Boucherouite rag rugs are particularly prized today for their extravagant improvised designs, bold coloring, and creative geometric patterns, woven by Berber women using whatever colorful fabric came to hand. No two are alike, and their joyful, improvisational quality has made them enormously popular in contemporary interiors worldwide.
