Dimensions: 4'8" x 5'5" (142 cm x 165 cm).
Circa: 1920.
This antique circa 1920 Bakhshayesh rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian village weaving with a dramatic charcoal field, terracotta diamond medallion, and richly articulated botanical and geometric ornament. Its hand-knotted wool pile showcases stylized palmettes, hooked leaves, rosettes, and graphic tree forms framed by multiple floral borders in ivory, rust, sage, and gold. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, bedroom, or office.
Muted warm tones of charcoal, terracotta, ivory, rust, sage, gold, blue gray, and coral, with a charcoal field.
Bakhshayesh rugs are woven in a village of the same name in the Heriz region of northwest Iran, and are closely related to Serapi carpets in their large-scale geometric compositions and use of vegetable dyes. They are among the most beautiful and sought-after of all antique Persian carpets, produced from the mid-nineteenth century onward in relatively small quantities.
Distinguished by their spacious, boldly drawn medallion designs, soft camel and ivory grounds, and a rich palette of madder reds, indigos, and earthy golds, Bakhshayesh rugs combine tribal directness with an almost architectural grandeur. Their large format makes them particularly powerful in generous rooms, where their colors and compositions hold their own against high ceilings and substantial furniture.
