Amritzar (also spelled Amritsar) is a city in the Punjab region of northern India that emerged as a significant carpet-weaving center in the late nineteenth century, producing fine rugs primarily for export to Europe and America. Amritzar rugs are closely related to Agra carpets in technique — woven on a cotton foundation with a Persian asymmetric knot — but tend toward softer, more pastel palettes and lighter, more airy field compositions.
Floral lattice, scrolling vine, and open medallion formats are common. Their supple handle, refined drawing, and gentle color make them perennial favorites for traditional and transitional interiors.
