This antique Khotan rug, circa 1930, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind runner distinguished by its bold geometric drawing and striking saturated palette. The deep navy field is animated by repeating crimson tribal motifs and framed by multiple angular borders, showcasing the crisp visual rhythm and collectible character that make hand-knotted Central Asian rugs so compelling. Khotan rugs are from the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang, Chinese Turkestan. These unique rugs made in the towns Khotan, Kashgar, and Yarkand are often referred to as Samarkand after the main trading town in the region. They have a combination of designs and being on the silk route have influences from their Chinese, Turkoman, and Turkish neighbors. Fretwork, cloud borders, trellis patterns, pomegranates and carnations all are incorporated into their designs. They are of long and relatively narrow size with simplistic and spacious designs.
