This handmade, one-of-a-kind antique Bidjar rug from Persia, circa 1930, showcases a striking tribal geometric design with a stepped column of linked medallions set against a softly faded field. Its nuanced palette of blush, ivory, slate blue, and charcoal gives the hand-knotted composition exceptional depth, while the detailed border and densely drawn motifs reflect the enduring craftsmanship prized in Bidjar weavings. A refined statement piece for a hallway, entryway, or living room.
Faded warm tones of blush, ivory, slate, charcoal, rose, taupe, and dusty blue, with a ivory field.
Bidjar is a Kurdish town in northwestern Iran, renowned for producing what are often called the "iron rugs of Persia" — the heaviest, most densely woven and structurally rigid pile rugs in the world. The distinctive construction technique, in which the weft threads are hammered tightly into place during weaving, creates an almost board-like stiffness and an exceptionally dense pile that wears virtually indefinitely.
Bidjar designs include elaborate herati patterns, large floral medallions, and the distinctive "garden" or vase carpet format. Their palette tends toward deep jewel tones — rich madder reds, indigos, and ivory. Bidjar rugs are ideal for high-traffic areas and are among the most durable of all Oriental rugs.
