Soumak (also Sumak or Soumakh) is a flatweave technique in which supplementary weft threads are wrapped around warp threads in a continuous forward-and-back motion, creating a smooth, slightly ridged surface with a characteristic herringbone texture on the reverse. The technique originated in the Caucasus and is named for the town of Shemakha in Azerbaijan.
Soumak rugs are woven across the Caucasus, Iran, and Central Asia, with the most celebrated antique examples coming from the Shirvan and Kuba districts. Their bold geometric designs — large medallions, star forms, animal and human figures — are rendered with a precision made possible by the technique's fine resolution. They wear exceptionally well and are prized both as floor coverings and wall hangings.
