Saraband rugs are woven in the Saraband district of Arak province in west-central Iran, and are perhaps best known for the "mir" or boteh field pattern — rows of small paisley-like teardrop forms — that has become one of the most widely recognized motifs in Oriental rug design. The boteh may represent a bent cypress tree, a flame, or a stylized leaf; its exact origin is debated.
Classic Saraband rugs feature this all-over boteh field on a rich red ground with a distinctive border composition. They are woven on a cotton foundation with the asymmetric knot and a medium pile. Their warm, rhythmic pattern and versatile palette have made them enduringly popular in traditional and transitional interiors.
