Circa: 1920.
This antique Karabagh rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Caucasian weaving with a beautifully aged all-over design and a softly faded palette. Its hand-knotted character is expressed through geometric floral motifs, a warm brown field, ivory border detailing, and striking violet-blue accents that give the composition depth and collector appeal. A versatile small-format antique, it is especially well-suited for an entryway, hallway, or office.
Faded warm tones of brown, taupe, ivory, charcoal, slate, violet, and black, with a brown field.
Karabagh rugs are made in the south eastern Caucasus close to the Kazak district bordering North Eastern Iran. They have varied designs. Some derive from the classical 18th Century carpets, such as the large medallion format, and some are more formal French influence, related to the Aubusson and Savonnerie styles with their more realistic drawing. They are more often woven on a woolen foundation.
