This handmade one-of-a-kind Donegal rug showcases the Arts and Crafts tradition with a warm terracotta field framed by an elegant floral border and softly drawn all-over patterning. Its antique character is expressed through a beautifully faded palette, nuanced abrash, and refined hand-knotted craftsmanship that gives the long runner format exceptional decorative presence. An ideal choice for a hallway, entryway, or dining room.
Faded warm tones of terra cotta, rust, coral, gold, slate, and olive, with a terra cotta field.
Donegal rugs are hand-knotted in County Donegal on the northwest coast of Ireland, in a tradition established by Alexander Morton & Co, who opened their Killybegs factory in 1898 as part of the Arts and Crafts movement. Morton sought to bring fine rug-making to rural Ireland, employing local weavers using local wool and natural dyes to produce carpets designed by leading Arts and Crafts artists including C.F.A. Voysey and Gavin Morton.
Donegal rugs are characterized by their flat, strong geometric patterns — influenced by both Celtic ornament and Persian design — and their distinctive soft palette derived from local heather, lichen, and vegetable dyes. They are rare, collectible, and deeply connected to the Arts and Crafts ideal of beautiful, honest craft.
