Savonnerie rugs are among the most celebrated achievements of European decorative art — hand-knotted pile carpets produced at the Savonnerie manufactory, which traces its origins to a workshop founded in 1615 in a former soap factory (hence the name, savonnerie) on the Quai de Chaillot, Paris, and received its royal patent from Louis XIII in 1627. Created exclusively for French royal palaces and as diplomatic gifts, they represent the culmination of Western ambition in rug design.
The grandest Savonnerie carpets — a commission of 93 carpets woven for the Grande Galerie of the Louvre under Louis XIV between 1670 and 1685 — feature elaborate baroque compositions of acanthus scrolls, laurel wreaths, royal emblems, and military trophies on black or deep-colored grounds. Later examples in the Louis XV and XVI styles introduced lighter, more pastoral compositions. Antique Savonneries are museum-quality objects of the first importance.
