Bokara (also Bukhara) is both a city in Uzbekistan and the name given to a broad category of Turkmen-style rugs distinguished by their repeating "gul" (elephant foot) motifs on deep burgundy-red grounds. Historically Bukhara was the principal trading center for Turkmen tribal rugs, and the name became synonymous with this style regardless of where specific rugs were actually woven.
True antique Bokara rugs from the Tekke, Yomut, and other Turkmen tribes are highly collectible; later commercial versions woven in Pakistan and Afghanistan carry on the tradition in a more accessible format. The bold symmetry and rich red palette make Bokara rugs perennially popular in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
