Dimensions: 4'3" x 7'8" (130 cm x 234 cm).
Circa: 1920.
This antique circa 1920 Malayer rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian weaving with a finely detailed charcoal field framed by ivory and taupe geometric borders. Its hand-knotted wool pile showcases a dramatic ivory lozenge medallion, stylized floral rosettes, and warm ochre accents in a beautifully balanced village design. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, bedroom, or office.
Faded neutral tones of charcoal, ivory, taupe, ochre, camel, ebony, and slate, with a charcoal field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
