This antique Malayer rug, hand-knotted in Persia circa 1920, is a one-of-a-kind piece distinguished by its elongated runner format and intricate all-over floral drawing anchored by a dramatic stepped medallion. A softly faded palette of blue, ivory, taupe, and muted rust lends the rug remarkable depth and patina, while the finely articulated border and dense patterning showcase the refined craftsmanship collectors prize in early 20th-century village weaving. An elegant choice for a hallway, living room, or dining area.

Faded neutral tones of taupe, blue, ivory, camel, rust, sage, and brown, with a taupe field.

Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.

Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
