This antique circa 1900 Bidjar rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian carpet distinguished by its architectural medallion composition and finely drawn geometric detailing. The stepped blush medallion rises across a pale blue field, framed by a rich rust border that gives the piece strong contrast, decorative balance, and collector-worthy presence. Its hand-knotted character and crisp tribal-inflected patterning make it an ideal centerpiece for a living room, bedroom, or office.
Muted warm tones of light blue, rust, blush, ivory, sage, camel, and charcoal, with a light blue field.
Bidjar is a Kurdish town in northwestern Iran, renowned for producing what are often called the "iron rugs of Persia" — the heaviest, most densely woven and structurally rigid pile rugs in the world. The distinctive construction technique, in which the weft threads are hammered tightly into place during weaving, creates an almost board-like stiffness and an exceptionally dense pile that wears virtually indefinitely.
Bidjar designs include elaborate herati patterns, large floral medallions, and the distinctive "garden" or vase carpet format. Their palette tends toward deep jewel tones — rich madder reds, indigos, and ivory. Bidjar rugs are ideal for high-traffic areas and are among the most durable of all Oriental rugs.
