This handmade, one-of-a-kind vintage Malayer runner from Persia, circa 1940, showcases a beautifully time-softened tribal-geometric design with a pale ivory field, sand and taupe patterning, and striking sky blue accents. Its elongated composition, stepped motifs, and compartmentalized medallion elements reflect the distinctive artistry of Malayer weaving, while the faded palette gives it an airy, collected character that works effortlessly in layered interiors. Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.

Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory.
