Circa: 1920.
Antique Belouch rug, circa 1920, hand-knotted and one-of-a-kind, with a softly faded camel field enlivened by pale aqua geometric medallions and crisp tribal border work. The elongated runner format and balanced symmetry showcase the graphic clarity collectors prize in Belouch weaving, while the low contrast palette gives the piece an airy, timeworn character. An ideal accent for a hallway, entryway, or bedroom.
Faded neutral tones of camel, ivory, pale aqua, taupe, and sand, with a camel field.
Belouch (also Baluch or Balochi) rugs are woven by the Baluch tribal confederacy spanning eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and parts of Pakistan. Among the most immediate and expressive of all tribal rugs, they are made on horizontal ground looms using a wool foundation and a distinctive palette dominated by deep reds, rich browns, dark navy, and ivory — colors drawn from the natural dyes of the desert plateau.
Designs include prayer formats, repeating geometric field patterns, and stylized tree-of-life compositions, often finished with elaborate flatwoven kilim ends. Their rustic, heartfelt quality and superb natural dyes make them perennially popular with collectors and designers seeking authentic tribal character.
