Dimensions: 6'8" x 9'5" (203 cm x 287 cm).
Circa: 1940.
This handmade, one-of-a-kind antique Afghan rug from circa 1940 showcases a classic tribal gul design rendered in a beautifully time-softened palette. Its hand-knotted field is framed by multiple geometric borders, with an elegant all-over repetition of octagonal motifs that gives the piece remarkable balance, texture, and collector appeal. The subdued, faded tones make it an ideal centerpiece for a living room, bedroom, or office.
Faded neutral tones of ivory, taupe, gray, beige, and camel, with a ivory field.
Although Afghanistan shares its western border with Iran, its rugs share no similarities. It is intersected by Baluch, Uzbec and Turkmen weavers and so have a Central Asian influence. The weavers are tribal and nomadic and often use the “Gul” or elephants foot design. They come in deep madders and rusts with black outlining. They sometimes use greens, yellows and blue in the accent colors.
