Melas (also Milas) rugs are woven in and around the town of Milas in southwestern Turkey (ancient Caria), one of the most historically important rug-producing regions of Anatolia. Melas prayer rugs are among the most beautiful and distinctive of all Turkish rugs, characterized by a broad, stepped mihrab niche in a warm, unusual palette — soft yellows, warm aubergine, pale rose, and ivory — quite unlike the stronger colors typical of other Anatolian regions.

Their subdued, almost painterly color and gracefully drawn niche format give Melas rugs a distinctive meditative quality. Antique examples are eagerly sought by collectors of Turkish rugs.
