Farahan rugs are produced in the Farahan district of Arak province in west-central Iran, one of the most important carpet-weaving regions of the nineteenth century. They are distinguished by their exceptionally fine weave, their use of the Senneh (asymmetric) knot on a cotton foundation, and their characteristic dark green field color — a rare and distinctive feature in Persian carpet making.
Classic Farahan designs include the all-over herati pattern, the mahi (fish) lattice, and elegant medallion compositions. Their restrained palette and precise drawing give them a sophistication that has made them among the most admired of all antique Persian rugs. Farahan weaving largely ceased after the early twentieth century, making fine antique examples rare and increasingly valuable.
