This vintage Malayer rug is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian runner distinguished by its softly timeworn palette and finely drawn all-over patterning. The elongated field pairs faded sky blue with warm taupe and brown accents, framed by an ivory border that showcases the nuanced character and decorative depth collectors prize in hand-knotted village rugs. An elegant choice for a hallway, entryway, or narrow living space.
Faded neutral tones of ivory, sky blue, taupe, brown, camel, slate, and rust, with a blue field.
Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
Malayer designs tend toward the geometric, with herati, mahi (fish), and stylized floral patterns rendered in a traditional palette of deep indigo, madder red, and ivory. Their precise drawing, durable construction, and handsome proportions make antique Malayer rugs a consistently sought-after choice for collectors and decorators alike.
