This antique Malayer rug, circa 1930, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind Persian village weaving with a finely drawn all-over lattice of stylized floral and geometric motifs. Its softly aged palette of ivory, taupe, charcoal, and pale sky blue gives the hand-knotted design an elegant, timeworn character, while the layered border system and balanced field create strong decorative presence without overwhelming a space. Malayer rugs are woven in and around the town of Malayer in western Iran, within the greater Hamadan district. Comprising over a hundred villages each with its own subtle design traditions, the Malayer region produces hand-knotted rugs on a cotton foundation using the symmetrical Turkish knot — finer and more tightly woven than most Hamadan work.
