Circa: 1930.
This antique Karabagh rug, hand-knotted circa 1930, is a one-of-a-kind Caucasian piece distinguished by its striking turquoise-blue field and bold stepped medallion composition. Intricate floral and geometric detailing in rust, ivory, and soft gold animate the spacious open ground, while the layered border and visible age-softened palette give it the character collectors prize in early 20th-century village weaving. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, dining room, or office.
Faded cool tones of turquoise, rust, ivory, terra cotta, gold, slate, camel, and charcoal, with a turquoise field.
Karabagh rugs are made in the south eastern Caucasus close to the Kazak district bordering North Eastern Iran. They have varied designs. Some derive from the classical 18th Century carpets, such as the large medallion format, and some are more formal French influence, related to the Aubusson and Savonnerie styles with their more realistic drawing. They are more often woven on a woolen foundation.
