This antique Afghan rug, circa 1920, is a handmade, one-of-a-kind tribal carpet distinguished by its orderly field of stepped geometric medallions and finely drawn border work. Its softly faded palette of camel, taupe, ivory, and brown gives the hand-knotted design a refined, timeworn character that complements both traditional and collected interiors. An ideal centerpiece for a living room, bedroom, or office.

Although Afghanistan shares its western border with Iran, its rugs share no similarities. It is intersected by Baluch, Uzbec and Turkmen weavers and so have a Central Asian influence. The weavers are tribal and nomadic and often use the “Gul” or elephants foot design. They come in deep madders and rusts with black outlining. They sometimes use greens, yellows and blue in the accent colors.
